Common Cold

Cold and cough have become synonymous to the metro cities of India. Every weather change, the first one to greet you is common cold.

Here is how you can fight it with simple home remedies. All of these are tried and tested by me on myself and even my family. Believe me it works!

Just remember that when you decide to do alternative methods of healing, you have to be patient. Allopathy works fast but is short term relief whereas Ayurveda and Homepathy work slow and are good for longterm.

Kitchen ingredient Remedies

For Cold

  • Every morning chew 7-8 Tulsi leaves and swallow 2 black pepper pods whether you have cold or not.
  • In case of runny rose, grate ginger and squeeze about 1 tablespoon juice. Add honey and have it in the morning.
  • Turmeric powder is THE most effective herb for cold. Take a glass of milk. Add 1/4 tsp of turmeric and bring it to boil for a few minutes. Cool it. Sip the warm milk at night before bed.
  • In case of blocked nose, take half a bowl ajwain seeds and dry roast them on a pan. After cooling, tie them in a handkerchief or muslin cloth and use it as an inhaler.
  • Early morning drink ginger tea. Take about 1-1/2inch of ginger and add to water. Let it boil for about 5 minutes until the water comes down to ½ glass. Add honey and sip this tea. Alternately grate ginger and squeeze juice out og the grated ginger. Add one spoon honey and have it on empty stomach, do not drink water for next 20 minutes.
  • Take 8-10  tulsi leaves, 1/2 inch ginger.4-5 peppercorns,1-2 garlic clove. Add all of them to 1 litre water and bring it to boil until it becomes 1/4th of the original quantity. Drink every morning with honey.

For Cough

  • Boil turmeric in a cup of milk and give it at bedtime.
  • Rub Sarson oil on the chest and the feet.
  • Equal amount of Ginger juice and Honey. Grate ginger and squeeze out the juice and add 1 spoon honey to it. Have 2-3 times during the day.
  • 1 spoon black pepper powder and 4 spoon jiggery. Mix this and make small balls out of it. Have 3-4 during the day.
  • 2-3 times a day Tulsi juice.

Ayurvedic powder remedy

  • Jethimadh is very effective in treating cold. Keep having a pinch of powder 3-4 times in the day.
  • Soonth powder is known for its heating properties and used in small amount in form of concoction to treat cold.
  • Sitophaladi powder 1 tsp with honey helps relieve cough. You can take this mixture thrice a day.

Kadha (concoction) recipe:

Ingredients:

8-10 ajwain leaves

4-5 tulsi leaves

4-5 pudina leaves

pinch of turmeric powder

pinch of soonth powder

Method:

Boil all the ingredients in a litre of water. Continue boiling water reduces to 1/3rd of its amount. Strain and have it  2-3 times a day.

If you dont have any leaves just boil turmeric with some grated ginger(optional) and have that hot water after straining. You can add dash of ghee and pinch of salt to it before drinking.
