Shrug off your worries and stresses at Switzerland’s best open-air thermal pools in Leukerbad

I love travelling to Europe for a number of reasons – the history, the heritage architecture, the countryside’s natural splendour and of course, the healing water spas! In my opinion, one of the best spa towns in Europe is Karlovy Vary (aka Carlsbad) in the Czech Republic. However, if CZ is not on your itinerary but Switzerland is (for millions of tourists, Europe = Switzerland!), then you should definitely visit Leukerbad.

Leukerbad is the largest thermal spa resort in the Alps. Reaching temperatures of up to 51 ºC, the water in the town’s baths is rich in minerals to soothe your body and calm your mind. Strengthen your immune system, work up a sweat and say goodbye to sore muscles and stress at Leukerbad! I’m a stressed person myself so I know it works! ☺ Take a leisurely dip in one of the many open-air, natural pools while surrounded by the snow-capped mountains of the Alps. ‘Immerse’ yourself in the experience – you won’t regret it!

My husband and I visited Leukerbad in 2008. We took a train from Interlaken Ost, which covered the approx 93 km distance to Leuk in about 2 hours. You can also drive if you prefer, but I’d recommend the train option. It’s cheaper and you can enjoy the passing scenery – which is drop-dead gorgeous by the way – without worrying about things like speed limits and tolls.

After disembarking at Leuk station (Platform 1), we took the bus waiting outside to Leukerbad proper which is 30 min ride. Swiss has excellent absolutely punctual public transport system. We were treated with some beautiful views on the 0.5 hour bus journey. The town of leuk below as we ascend towards Leukerbad.

You need to travel light if you want to visit these small villages in Swiss as you would have to walk to your hotel with your bags !!

But nonetheless the pretty narrow would take your fatigue away. You can take photo stops with your luggage (Bagvati) 😉

We had booked a weekend’s stay at Lindner Alpentherme, Europe’s largest high-altitude Alpine thermal spa. The pools, the service, the professional spa massages – these are only some of the features that made our experience at this hotel so unforgettable.

The experience of staying in this village frequented by the locals was fabulous. The streets looked liked just out of fairytale and we enjoyed strolling in the mornings and evenings.

Have you visited Leukerbad yet? I’d love to hear about your experiences. Drop me a note at the page below if you need help with your booking.
